ConsenSys Quorum QUORUM
Overview
ConsenSys Quorum is an enterprise-grade Ethereum client derived from go-ethereum (geth). It extends Ethereum with permissioning, private transactions, and alternative consensus mechanisms suitable for enterprise consortia. As an Ethereum-based solution, Quorum benefits from the largest smart contract developer ecosystem and tooling while adding the privacy and performance features businesses require.
Key Strengths
- Full Ethereum compatibility — use existing Solidity contracts, Truffle/Hardhat tools, and MetaMask
- Private transactions via Tessera (transaction manager) — sensitive data stays between involved parties
- Permissioned network control with node-level and account-level access management
- Multiple consensus options: IBFT 2.0 (BFT), QBFT, Raft, and Clique
- Can bridge to Ethereum mainnet for hybrid public/private architectures
- Backed by ConsenSys — the largest Ethereum ecosystem company
Cost
ConsenSys Quorum is free and open-source under the LGPL 3.0 license. Self-hosting requires standard cloud infrastructure ($300-1,500/month for a small consortium). ConsenSys also offers Quorum as a managed service through partners and its own platform, with pricing varying by deployment size and support tier.
Use Cases
- Central bank digital currencies (CBDC) — used in multiple CBDC pilots worldwide
- Tokenization of financial assets and securities
- Enterprise supply chain management
- Intercompany data sharing in consortia (energy, telecom, finance)
- Decentralized identity and credential management
